Detroit Casinos
Overview
In 1996, Michigan voters approved operation of three
casinos in the City of Detroit. After
a lengthy review process, the City selected the Motor City, MGM Grand
Detroit, and Greektown casinos from a pool of applicants that included Donald
Trump and other notables. The City and
the chosen casinos forged a deal whereby each casino would eventually build a
permanent, full-scale Las Vegas-style hotel / casino complexes. The casinos were allowed to build temporary
gaming facilities for use until the permanent casinos were completed. Construction of these new facilities is now
under way with expected completion in the 2007-2008 timeframe.
Fortunately for you, the
three temporary casinos offer visitors a wide range of gaming and
entertainment comparable to any major casino.
Slots, table games, poker, you name it -- there is plenty of
excitement to be found in Detroit's casinos.
Each casino offers something a little different and they are all
worthwhile destinations. But if you've
only got time for one or two, we'll give some guidance and let you decide!

More Information
MGM Grand Detroit Casino
1300 John C. Lodge (off the
freeway service drive)
Website
The first of the three Detroit casinos to open in the
City (opened in 1999), the MGM Grand brings Detroit a true Las Vegas brand
name and gaming experience. With
approximately 88,000 square feet of gaming space, the MGM Grand has a bright
and expansive feel. Numerous casino
promotions for gamblers and non-gamblers alike make the MGM Grand a great
place to spend time for all. Located
just off the John C. Lodge freeway (M-10), the casino is very accessible and
has well-lit parking structure connected to the casino via a skywalk (free
validation).
Motor
City Casino
2901
Grand River Avenue
Website
Motor City Casino, opened in 1999 by a partnership
that included Vegas-based Mandalay Bay Resort Group (now owned by MGM-Mirage)
as well as local investors, occupies what was once the Wonder Bread Baking
Factory. The structure has been
transformed into a sleek and modern gaming facility complete with computer screens
and electronic player's card readers at the tables as well as mechanical
shufflers. Motor City Casino is
located off the John C. Lodge Freeway (M-10) about a mile north and west of
the immediate Downtown area. Parking is available in the attached
parking structure or via the innovative electronic call valet system.
Greektown
Casino
555
East Lafayette Avenue
Website
The last of the three casinos to open in the City
(opened in 2000), the complex is, as its name suggests, located in the heart
of bustling Greektown. At night, Greektown patrons can be found
enjoying 2 floors and 75,000 square feet of gaming area, including the
largest poker room in town (16 tables).
Although there is little in the way of dining (intentionally due to
the close proximity to numerous restaurants), entertainment abounds here with
local bands and an occasional national act performing at one of several
venues in the casino. Park in the
nearby structure (free validation) and access the casino via the covered
walkway, passing through the beautiful Atheneum Hotel on your way. The casino also boasts its own People Mover connection, making it a
convenient and accessible destination.
Casino
Windsor
377 Riverside
Drive, Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Website

Our Canadian neighbors
across the river actually beat Detroit to the gambling punch with the opening
of Casino Windsor in 1994. This AAA
four-diamond hotel and gaming facility is similar to what was envisioned for
the permanent facilities in Detroit.
Due in large part to increased competition from the temporary casinos
in Detroit and increased border security between Detroit and Windsor, Casino
Windsor is not as profitable as it once was.
However, your American Dollar still goes a long ways at Casino Windsor
due to the exchange rate, so don't hesitate to visit this impressive facility
with three floors of Las-Vegas style gambling.
